Medical Office Assistant is a blended learning program that is a combination of online and in-person practical classes. The Medical Office Assistant course will teach students the clinical and administrative aspects of working in a medical setting.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: When a student has completed the Medical Office Assistant Diploma Program, they will be proficient in all of the clinical aspects of a medical center. Students will be able to effectively assist physicians and nurses in preparing for particular medical treatments and procedures as well as prepping the patient to see the physician or nurse.

Course Description

Functionality You Will Love

Assisting with Minor Surgical Procedures, Bandaging

Student will be knowledgeable in how to set up the treatment room for various minor surgical procedures and preparing injections. The student will gain knowledge that will make them available to assist the physician in the procedure itself. Students will be educated on preparing and maintaining a sterile field. Students will also gain the education of working with sterile solutions. Minor procedures will include: mole/skin tag excision circumcision/dorsal slits biopsy vasectomy incision and drainage wart removal toe wedge resection/Vandenbos cauterization cyst removal sutures

ECG Training

Students will have an understanding of basic interpretation regarding visible heart rhythm abnormalities such as bradycardia and tachycardia. Students will know the purpose of an ECG reading, have an understanding of the measurements recorded by an ECG (waves, segments, and intervals). Students will be able to identify rhythm. As well as the above, students will have the ability to prepare a patient for an ECG as well as perform the procedure itself. With a day of hands-on training by a certified technician from Saskatchewan Cardiology Technologist Association.

Preparing for Patient Visits

Students will be educated on various types of patient visits that may happen within the clinical setting. The student must be prepared on how to correctly prepare for each visit, including which vitals to obtain and record, what is needed for the physician to complete each appointment, and how to efficiently participate in the patient visit. Covered in this class will be regular office visits for minor illnesses, emergent visits, complete physicals, prenatal and postnatal appointments, well baby checks, pre-operative assessments, third party medicals, emergency exams, female gynecological exams, and male exams. Students will learn associated important terms, supplies required, and how to properly gather information needed to be placed in the patient chart for the continuation of care. Students will also be knowledgeable on the triaging of patient care.

Clinical Vitals, Body Mechanics, Transfers

Students will begin learning how to manually determine patient vital signs, combining this new skill with their previously learned charting skills. Clinical vitals are arranged so the student will be performing and practicing all vitals each week throughout the duration of their course, beginning in their second week. Students will be responsible to complete checklists for each vital which is to be performed. Once their vital checklists are completed through practicing, they will perform a final hands-on exam with their instructor to ensure that they are competent in obtaining the patient’s clinical vitals. Students will be educated in body mechanics, meaning specific terminology will be instructed, ensuring the student is competent in various positions needed for various examinations to be performed. Transfers are an important aspect of this class, where the student will be informed about the proper and safe ways to help patients out of wheelchairs, off or on to treatment beds, including helping a patient off of the floor in the event of a fall.

Charting

This charting course will start with a quick refresher of how to make a manual chart and where to keep pertinent information. The student will then move into learning what clinical information needs to be recorded in a patient’s chart – with a wide array of different appointment types addressed. Students will be given an introduction to forms in this class. The student will learn charting as their first section in this course because they will be using charting of clinical information and completion of forms throughout their course as charting is imperative to patient care.

Infection Control

Students will be educated on universal precautions common in the clinic environment. There will be education in the area of hand washing including proper glove (sterile and non-sterile) application and removal. Students will be knowledgeable on cleaning exam rooms and clinic stations to ensure no cross-contamination and safety for patients and staff. There will be education on exposure to needle pokes, blood and bodily fluids including the proper use of a vomit kit and spill kit. Ensuring proper knowledge of handling and disposing sharps. Students will have knowledge of using proper isolation techniques including use of equipment and proper disposal of equipment and biohazard waste. Student will take part in WHMIS training as well in this class.

Specimen Collection

Students will understand the importance of collecting specimens for continuation of care of patients. There will be instruction on a number of commonly seen specimen collection including: • Fecal (FIT, Stool C&S, Ova and Parasite, Pinworm, C Diff) • Urine (Urinalysis, C&S, Cytology, STI screening for chlamydia and gonorrhea) • Mycology (fungal testing – skin and nail specimen collection) • Swabs (C&S, viral, aerobic) Also covered in this class will be the preparation of sending samples including the requisition needed and labels required for each.

Wrapping and Sterilization

Students will learn about various instruments used in a clinical setting as well as sanitization and disinfection techniques. Students will also learn how to properly wrap instruments to prepare for autoclaving. As well, students will be instructed on how to properly run an Autoclave cycle.

WHMIS Training

Students will learn detailed plans for safely using hazardous materials at a medical office. Identification by labels, safety data sheets (SDS) and education helps the student prepare for use with various chemicals used in a medical clinic. The outcome of WHMIS is to help prevent injuries, illness, death, and fires caused by hazardous materials. Students will receive training in the following areas: hazard identification, product classification, labelling, safety data sheets, as well as worker training and education.

Microsoft Office

This Microsoft Office course will give the student building blocks to navigate through any project using Word and Excel. The Microsoft Office course is designed to give the students practical use of the program and to be able to apply this knowledge in an office setting. Each chapter builds on the previous knowledge learned and covers both basic and advanced use of Microsoft Office which will build further on the student’s understanding of these programs.

Financial Management/Math Skills

Financial management/math skills will give the student basic skills in understanding financial transactions of a business. These skills will be expanded on further through manual and computerized accounting courses. The student will be taught terminology associated and step-by- step instructions of different transaction types that would take place daily in a medical setting. While being instructed in this area, basic math skills will be covered.

Anatomy and Physiology

This anatomy and physiology course will give the student a basic understanding of what anatomy and physiology is, specialized to body systems. This will give the student the ability to describe a body system and understand the systemic properties. There will also be instruction on pathological conditions of each system. Medical abbreviations will be covered in this course. This course will be a prerequisite to medical transcription.

Basic Medical Billing

This basic medical billing course will give the student experience with basic medical billing procedures in Saskatchewan. In this course, the student will learn basic rules and regulations that will be applied to medical billing in an office setting. This course focuses on procedures performed in a medical office, hospital, house calls, or care homes. The ability to submit and reconcile claims is not covered in this unit because we are not a functioning medical clinic; however, these procedures are discussed throughout the course.

Medical Law and Ethics

This medical law and ethics course will give the student relevant knowledge and understanding of basic history of law and ethics pertaining to the medical profession. Covered in this course will be the difference between law and ethics, legal responsibilities of anyone employed in a medical setting, and information about cases involving malpractice and negligence in the province of Saskatchewan.

Patient Psychology

Grammar

This patient psychology course will give the student relevant knowledge and understanding of various psychological methods and ideology pertaining to patient care. Covered in this course will be basic human needs, stages of grieving, different personality types, and communication with all patients.

Communications/Cultural Sensitivity

The communications course will cover effective communication and conflict resolution with special emphasis on cultural differences. Students will pay particular attention to how they present themselves both intentionally and unintentionally and how to professionally present themselves in a medical office environment. This course will pay particular attention to creating, building, and maintaining interpersonal relationships. Each chapter dealt with will include a summary of applying skills to workplace situations.

Basic Medical Transcription

This basic transcription course will give the student experience with transcribing important medical reports that are specialty specific. The modules in basic transcription are designed to give the student a real-time feel of transcribing in a medical setting. This course will work on the student’s ability to manage time, use resources, and use knowledge gained in the previously completed courses of grammar, proofreading, basic terminology, and anatomy and physiology. Basic medical transcription is a prerequisite of advanced medical transcription.

CPR 

Students will complete an approved CPR and First Aid Level C AED course in order to meet their requirements for course completion. This course is arranged by Axiom with a third-party provider who instructs CPR for Red Cross.

This grammar course will take you through the basics of English grammar, giving a solid foundation of proper grammar usage for further learning. Writing and grammar skills are essential in any line of work, at any age, and for any reason. This class will center on instructing students to properly and effectively apply grammar rules to professional situations. Including covering the eight parts of speech, the student will also have skills in proper sentence structure, correct word/verb usage, proper punctuation, and proper number expression.

Medical Office Procedures

The medical office procedures course will cover particular skills necessary for effectively functioning in a medical office environment. The class will include proper professional written and verbal communication, filing, procedures manuals, all pertaining to a medical office environment. Along with these skills, the student will learn the personal qualifications and responsibilities of a medical office assistant. The course will develop professional skills to be used in any office setting. Students will be trained in manual skills as well as using the Accuro EMR program.

Basic Medical Terminology –

This basic medical terminology course will give the student a basic understanding of the medical language. There are twelve units that will be body system specific. Included in this course is prefix, suffix, and word root usage, pronunciation, and terminology with definitions of medical words. Basic medical terminology is a prerequisite for advanced medical terminology.

Typing

This course would contain typing practice strategies for students to build confidence typing beginning with basic typing practices. Once these practices are learned the student moves on to focusing on accuracy and finally building on typing speed. To produce an acceptable typing speed, the student must provide three (3) different typing timings with five (5) or less mistakes. The typing speed will then be an average of the three qualified timings. Student timings can only be accepted when completed in Axiom’s computer lab. An instructor must be present. The student name must be printed on the timing.
